  18. 1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  20.   - Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.x
  21.   - 8 MB RAM (Windows 95/98)

  23.   - 800 KB Free Disk Space (4 MB during installation)

  26.   SmartDir will NOT run under Windows 3.1,
  27.   Windows for Workgroups, or Windows NT 3.x.

  30. 2. INSTALLATION
  31.  
  32.   The distributed smdir30.exe file is a self-extracting
  33.   archive. It can be used to install SmartDir in one of
  34.   two ways:
  35.  
  36.   - Running it directly will automatically extract the
  37.     installation files and start the install program.
  38.  
  39.   OR
  40.  
  41.   - If you prefer, you can use an unzip utility to extract
  42.     and review the included files prior to the install.
  43.     If you extract the files manually, you can start the
  44.     install process by running the setup.exe program.

  47. 3. UNINSTALLATION
  48.  
  49.   To completely remove SmartDir from your computer
  50.   you should use one of the following two methods:
  51.  
  52.   - Click the "UnInstall" item in the SmartDir program group.
  53.  
  54.   OR
  55.  
  56.   - Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel.
  57.   - Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  58.   - Select the Install/Uninstall tab.
  59.   - Select "SmartDir 3.0" in the list of installed programs.
  60.   - Click the Add/Remove button.

  62.   Note:
  63.   If you have placed any files other than the original
  64.   SmartDir components in the program directory
  65.   (default is C:\Program Files\Gavlock Consulting),
  66.   this directory will not be removed, and the additional
  67.   (non-SmartDir) files will not be deleted.

  72.   Comprehensive program documentation is available via
  73.   the Help menu. Context sensitive help is provided in
  74.   many dialog boxes.

  102.     All Reports:
  103.      - Removed the 20,000 line report limit.
  104.      - Changed the way reports are generated, resulting in
  105.        decreased memory usage and an exponential speedup.
  106.      - Added a "batch" interface that allows you to
  107.        generate reports in an unattended manner via the
  108.        command line. You can use the system scheduler to
  109.        automatically run a report at a given time
  110.        (for example: every Monday at 4:00 AM).
  111.      - Modified all date formats to show 4-digit years.
  112.      - Added the ability to choose between 3 date formats:
  113.        MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY, or YYYY/MM/DD.
  114.        (Initially defaults to the local Regional setting.)
  115.      - Added a "No Sorting" option to speed up the
  116.        generation of large reports (typically used with
  117.        Tab-Delimited output that will be sorted in another
  118.        application).

  120.        Accessed" dates in reports (in addition to the
  121.        existing "Last Modified" date).
  122.      - Added the ability to include sequence numbers in
  123.        reports (sequentially numbers each detail line).
  124.      - Changed Regular format reports to always show footer
  125.        totals (even if terminated with the Esc key).
  126.      - Added Computer Name and Volume Name info to
  127.        Regular report headers.
  128.      - Reformatted Regular report headers to make them
  129.        easier to read.

  131.     Directory Size Reports:
  132.      - Added "percent of total" figures to the FILES and
  133.        TOTAL SIZE columns.

  135.     Miscellaneous Improvements and Fixes:
  136.      - Removed the ability to sort on non-reported fields.
  137.      - Fixed a problem with individual file sizes over 2 GB
  138.        being reported as negative numbers.
  139.      - Fixed a problem with the 11-point font not
  140.        displaying correctly.
  141.      - Fixed a problem with improper line wrapping in
  142.        Regular reports.
  143.      - Added a "/faststart" command line switch. This can
  144.        be used to bypass the initial network status check,
  145.        speeding up the opening of SmartDir if connected to
  146.        a large network.
  147.      - Raised the "large report" warning dialog criteria
  148.        from 2,000 lines to 50,000 lines (due to the vast
  149.        improvement in speed).
  150.      - Updated the Help file to reflect the new features
  151.        and fix some minor context help issues.

  209.        to the correct directory if the default directory is
  210.        overridden at install time.
  211.      - Fixed the problem of SmartDir shortcuts not being
  212.        created when installed by a non-Administrator user
  213.        on Windows NT 4.
  214.      - Increased all "total size" counters to 64-bits. This
  215.        fixes problems with file systems larger than 4 GB.

  217.        directly from the program.
  218.      - Updated the Help file to reflect the new features.
  219.      - Added an initial Welcome dialog to the unregistered
  220.        version. It explains the 20 unlimited reports and
  221.        subsequent report line limits.
